Synopsis
Touted as the Peking opera rendition of "The Count of Monte Cristo,” "The Painting of 18 Lohans” portrays the moral dilemma faced by a master painter and her talented young ward as they struggle to stay within the appropriate Confucius framework for teacher-pupil conduct.
They successfully outmaneuver temptation and preserve ethical integrity by respectively painting only at night or day, restoring a historical masterpiece before the apprentice finds work at a local bookstore. Jealousy, however, leads the store owner to frame the novice painter, landing him a 15-year prison sentence that forever changes the young man's character…
