Historical exhibition 'Island Scenery in Taiwan Shashin Tsuushin' now online

Presented by the National Center of Photography and Images (NCPI), curated by researcher Hsu You-hua (徐佑驊), online exhibition "Island Scenery in Taiwan Shashin Tsuushin (《臺灣寫真通信》中的島嶼風景)" is now available on NCPI's website.

"Taiwan Shashin Tsuushin (臺灣寫真通信)" is an invaluable collection of NCPI as a relic from the Japanese rule period. With 120 pictures and their descriptions, it is an important record of the history of people and nature on the island. It contains the images of plants and animals native to the island, as well as the impressions of daily activities of the people, and the scenery of extraordinary landscapes.

Interestingly, though these images are about ordinary things and lives of Taiwanese people, yet they appear to be shocking and strange to the Japanese rulers. The album also depicts the infrastructure building processes by the Japanese authorities.
